This to explain why I wanted to read the play Monsieur Brotonneau.This is the French text. It is a typical play of the time about a cuckold husband. Monsieur Brotonneau leaves a choice to his wife: stay or live with the other guy, and of course the other guy has more nobility and money, so she leaves her husband. In the meantime the husband finds comfort with a secretary at his office ... until his wife comes back, discovering by comparison her husband's real qualities. Bretonneau decides to live with both of them, having great pity of both. Obviously, society does not appreciate his sense of ethics: all he wants is to keep everybody happy.
It is a morality tale with a twist, ancestor of more bitter and biting playwrights such as Bernard Shaw.
No doubt of historical interest, the play is now very dated.
